bykiloginTo set up your Byki account, come to the Bettendorf Public Library.  It only takes a minute!

Thanks to the generosity of the Friends of the Bettendorf Public Library, the Bettendorf Public Library now offers the online language learning program Byki.  Byki offers instruction in over 80 languages, allowing you to either brush up on your foreign language skills or learn a new language from scratch.

First time users of Byki must come to the Bettendorf Public Library to set up a free account. Once you've established your account, you can access Byki through any computer with an internet connection.

Byki is based on best-practices research which indicates that gathering a large store of vocabulary or language “chunks” (phrases, idioms, and common expressions) will reduce processing time needed to produce fluent speech or writing.  Based on this research, the best starting strategy for any language learner would be to quickly memorize a large number of frequently-used words, stock phrases, and common expressions. That's exactly what Byki enables you to do. Byki is specially designed to help you quickly build a vocabulary in the language you are learning - with perfect recall.

And it’s fun!  Imagine if you could have a blast learning dozens of phrases every hour and actually remember them later. That's Byki. And along the way you can do lots of cool stuff:

  • Slow down the native speaker sound (so you can understand it)
  • Keep track of your progress
  • Refresh items in your memory that you may have forgotten (Byki does this automatically)
  • Download thousands of extra words and phrases ("Byki lists") from ListCentral

Byki is developed by Transparent Language, a leading provider of best-practice language learning software for consumers, educational institutions, government agencies, and businesses. Transparent Language’s products are used in more than 12,000 civilian and government educational institutions, including major universities and government facilities, such as the Defense Language Institute and Foreign Service Institute.
