Sublimation is a way to print on fabric and other items. It uses special ink, heat, and pressure. The heat vaporizes the ink, which then bonds to your surface.
The advantage of sublimation printing is that, when done correctly on a proper surface, it is permanent. There is also no difference in how the item feels. Unlike heat transfer vinyl or screenprinting on a shirt, sublimation printing can’t be felt after it’s applied.
You can sublimate onto fabric that is at least 65% polyester. Craft stores carry a wide range of items that are made for sublimation, including coffee mugs, tumblers, mouse pads, phone cases, and so much more.
It’s best to have your sublimation blank be white or light colored. Sublimation ink is transparent, so white or light colors work best.
The Library has three heat presses to accommodate a wide range of needs. We have a standard flat press, a hat press, and a mug press. The hat and mug presses have interchangeable plates to adapt to various sizes.
The sublimation printer and heat presses are located in the Creation Studio, and are available during Open Work Hours. The cost to print is $1.00 per page. You supply the blank onto which the print will be transferred. You will also need to supply the graphic in a supported format, such as jpg, png, pdf, tiff, gif. avof. webp. and eps.
